Topic: Understanding and Responding to Bullying in Schools
Presenter: Christine Waanders, PhD
Presenter Bio: Christine Waanders is a Clinical Psychologist and a Clinical Consultant for Bullying and
Aggression at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. After engaging in aggression prevention
research for many years, she now works in a consultative capacity, offering support and
consultation to clinicians and providers whose patients are engaged in or experiencing bullying
and aggression. In addition, she provides behavioral health evaluations and therapy through
CHOP’s school-based mental health program at Girard College in Philadelphia.
Bullying is a prevalent social concern in many schools. It can lead to emotional distress and
physical injury among students and can worsen the school social climate. This presentation will
review core information and current trends in bullying across elementary, middle, and high
school. We will review how cyberbullying is affecting kids today and strategies for reducing it.
We will learn effective ways of addressing bullying with students individually, at the classroom
level, and through school-wide interventions. An interactive component will allow participants to
apply what they have learned to several bullying scenarios.
